Parking On Campus

I am sure most College students can agree that finding a place to park can be a major issue, and serves as one of the biggest complaints amongst them every year. With that being the case, I chose to focus on the topic for my assignment. To do this, I asked questions to both the University Union's Parking Center and Chief of Police Kevin Sharkey, who each managed to provide me with information regarding certain subjects surrounding the matter.

In Slippery Rock's case, one of their biggest problems is that although there are a wide variety of parking lots throughout the University, many of them are not for students to use. As of 2021, there is a combined total of 8.7 thousand students attending on-campus classes, but less than a third of them able to secure a place to leave their vehicle.

The pie chart below provides the exact amount of spaces available on-campus, including Resident, Commuter, Staff, Handicap, Staff and Commuter, and Open Parking.

As you can see, Residents are with the largest amount of spaces, having a total of 1,020, Staff has the second largest with a total of 945, Commuters have the third with a total of 881, Open Parking has the fourth with 808, while Staff and Commuter and Handicap are the smallest, both having 404.

On top of this, Chief Sharkey also explained to me that each student with a vehicle on campus has to pay $25 dollars per permit, while staff on the other hand are given two decals for free, but for anymore after that, will also have to pay $25 dollars as well.

My main purpose with this study was to find out exactly how many spaces there are around campus, which group has the largest amount, and how many students there are who can use them. In terms of proximity, I would say that it can only be useful to Slippery Rock students alone, as it's main focus is something nobody but them can relate to since their campus serves as the primary subject.
