Should College Students Have To Wear Masks On Campus?

In preparation for returning to campus this year, I made the decision to get the Covid-19 vaccine, hoping that doing so would prevent me from having to wear a mask both on campus and during my classes. However, on the day I moved into my dorm, I was immediately told to put one on upon entering the building, even after explaining that I was vaccinated. Since then, I have continued to think that it is not fair for this to be a requirement, and that there are many other ways to handle the situation.

To begin, I feel that the most logical way to deal with this issue could easily be by having the vaccinated student present their vaccine cards to their professors and housing directors, which can therefore prove that they do not have to wear a mask. In this article, there is a section where a College Dean states that the vaccines should be fully able to prevent any serious virus outbreaks from happening, and that nothing major would result if anyone were to get sick. However, there still leaves the fact that many students remain unvaccinated and can still be carriers of the virus as well. Plus, there is also the possibility fake vaccine cards being made as well, as stated in this article, which talks about how students at a particular university were caught selling them.

Another reason I feel that this could have been handled differently is by making it a requirement for students to get the vaccine in order to return. If this were to have happened, we would not only no longer need to wear masks, but it would have also made the virus less of a risk as well. As for the students who refused to get vaccinated for other reasons, I feel that they could have either been given the option to take their courses virtually or be regularly tested to make sure they are not carrying the virus. In this article, it references that point by focusing on a community college that will only allow fully vaccinated students to attend classes. I personally believe that if other schools were to go through with this choice, it could very likely turn out well.

In conclusion, I will say that while I do not find having to wear a mask on campus enjoyable, after looking into it more when researching this topic, I can also say that I understand the reason for it as well, and therefore only hope that as time goes on, the virus will soon continue to become less of a threat.
